This glossary can help you prepare for the IELTS writing tasks related to employment figures in different tourism-related industries.
accommodation
noun
A room, group of rooms, or building in which someone may live or stay.
Example: While the travel industry increased its workforce substantially over the decade, there was relatively little growth in that associated with hotels and other tourist accommodation.
associate
verb
Connect (someone or something) with something else in one's mind.
Example: While the travel industry increased its workforce substantially over the decade, there was relatively little growth in that associated with hotels and other tourist accommodation.
breakdown
noun
A failure of a relationship or system.
Example: The chart provides a breakdown of employment in a number of tourism-related industries over a ten-year period.
employment
noun
The state of having paid work.
Example: We can see that the total levels of employment increased by about twenty per cent during the period.
expansion
noun
The action of becoming larger or more extensive.
Example: Travel represented the biggest area of expansion, having almost doubled its number of employees by 2019.
fluctuation
noun
An irregular rising and falling in number or amount; a variation.
Example: The data suggests that, despite minor fluctuations in the various sectors, employment in the tourism industry as a whole will continue to grow.
industry
noun
A particular form or branch of economic or commercial activity.
Example: The food industry also saw a significant increase, from 283,000 employees in 2009 to 357,000 in 2019, while the sports industry enjoyed an almost equal level of growth.
slightly
adverb
To a small degree; not considerably.
Example: The least successful sector was culture, including museums and art galleries, where the figures actually fell slightly over the period.
substantially
adverb
To a great or significant extent.
Example: While the travel industry increased its workforce substantially over the decade, there was relatively little growth in that associated with hotels and other tourist accommodation.
variation
noun
A change or slight difference in condition, amount, or level, typically within certain limits.
Example: However, there was some variation in the figures for the individual sectors.
